NHS Meningitis B (MenB)

The NHS MenB vaccination programme launches from July 2026 to help protect eligible young people against meningitis B and septicaemia before starting university or residential education. If you are a Year 13 student or a first-time university student under 25, you may be eligible for free NHS vaccination. Private MenB vaccination appointments are also available for patients who are not eligible or who wish to be vaccinated sooner.

Sharmans Pharmacy is pleased to offer the NHS MenB (Meningococcal B) Vaccination Service for eligible patients as part of the national NHS vaccination programme.

Meningococcal B (MenB) disease is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can cause meningitis (infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These illnesses can develop rapidly and may become life-threatening.

The NHS programme aims to protect young people before they start university or move into residential education, where the risk of meningococcal disease is higher.

Who is eligible for NHS MenB vaccination?

You may be eligible if you are:

  • A Year 13 student born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008
  • Under 25 years old and starting university for the first time in Autumn 2026
  • Under 25 years old and entering an eligible residential further education setting for the first time

Eligibility is determined according to NHS England guidance.

If you are unsure whether you qualify, our pharmacy team will be happy to help, we also offer a private service for non-eligible patients
When will the service start?
The NHS MenB Vaccination Service begins on 20 July 2026.

To provide the best possible protection before the start of the academic year, eligible patients are encouraged to receive their first dose as early as possible.

Appointments are available through participating NHS pharmacies, including Sharmans Pharmacy.
Which vaccine is used?
The NHS programme uses Bexsero®, a vaccine that protects against meningococcal group B disease.

A full course consists of:

2 doses
A minimum interval of 28 days between doses

For the best protection, both doses should ideally be completed before starting university or moving into student accommodation.
I've already had a MenB vaccine – what should I do?
Please tell us if you have previously received a MenB vaccination.

The two MenB vaccines used in the UK are:

Bexsero®
Trumenba®

Your previous vaccination history may affect the most appropriate vaccination schedule.

Our pharmacist will advise you based on the latest NHS guidance.
I've already had one dose of Trumenba®
If you are eligible for the NHS programme and have previously received one dose of Trumenba®, you have two options:

Complete your Trumenba® course privately.
Start a new NHS-funded course of Bexsero®.

Our pharmacist will discuss both options with you so you can make an informed decision.
I've already had one dose of Bexsero®
If you have previously received one dose of Bexsero®, you may only require one further NHS-funded dose to complete your course, subject to NHS eligibility and clinical assessment.
I've completed a MenB course already
If you have completed:

A full Bexsero® course within the last five years, or
A complete Trumenba® course within the last five years,

you are unlikely to require further MenB vaccination through the NHS programme.
What if I'm not eligible?
If you do not meet the NHS eligibility criteria, you may still benefit from protection against MenB through our private MenB vaccination service.

Private vaccination may be suitable for:

Existing university students
Adults wishing to protect themselves against MenB
Patients travelling overseas
Individuals outside the NHS eligibility criteria
Anyone wishing to receive vaccination before NHS appointments become available

Our pharmacist can advise whether private vaccination is appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is MenB?
MenB is a bacteria that can cause meningitis and septicaemia. Although uncommon, infection can become serious very quickly.

Is MenB the same as MenACWY?
No. MenACWY protects against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.

MenB vaccination protects against meningococcal group B.

Many students are advised to receive both vaccines for broader protection.

Can I book an NHS appointment?
Yes, if you meet the NHS eligibility criteria and appointments are available.

Please contact Sharmans Pharmacy to check availability or book online where available.

Can I choose private vaccination instead?
Yes.

Some patients may prefer private vaccination if they are not eligible for the NHS programme or wish to receive vaccination sooner.

Our pharmacist can help you decide which option is most appropriate.
